FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on strengthening the body while improving flexibility and overall body awareness. It was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century and has gained popularity as a fitness and rehabilitation method.

What are the key principles of pilates?

Key principles of Pilates include concentration, control, centering, flow, precision, and breathing. The exercises in Pilates are typically performed in a controlled and precise manner, emphasizing quality of movement over quantity. The core muscles, including the abdominal muscles, lower back, hips, and buttocks, are particularly targeted in Pilates exercises.

Can anyone do pilates?

Pilates can be adapted to suit different fitness levels, making it accessible to beginners as well as advanced practitioners. It’s often used by athletes, dancers, individuals undergoing rehabilitation, and those seeking a low-impact form of exercise that can improve strength, flexibility, and posture.

Can pilates assist my Chiropractic care?

We find that pilates exercises may help during the second phase of care during Chiropractic care plans. Here the focus is on rehabilitation and getting behind initial aches, pains or restrictions. It’s also about ensuring you build strength and resilience in a guided fashion so that aches and pains are less likely to return and to help prevent injury.

Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles, including the abdominal and lower back muscles.  A strong core can help to provide support to the spine, which in turn can help alleviate back pain,  improve spinal alignment and muscle balance, posture, flexibility or range of motion and complement chiropractic adjustments. People also report that pilates can really assist with wider biopsychosocial healthcare issues: For example, it can be good for mental health and a general sense of wellbeing.

What should I expect?

You can expect a workout that combines elements of strength training, flexibility, balance, and body awareness. Given that we focus on 1:1 classes here at Connective Chiropractic, you can expect your training to be focussed, yet tailored enough to meet your own needs or abilities.

A Pilates session usually begins with a gentle warm-up to prepare your body for exercise. This may include breathing exercises, gentle stretches, and movements to mobilize your joints.

Pilates exercises may then be more focussed. Exercises are precise and controlled, emphasizing quality of movement over quantity. You’ll engage specific muscle groups through a series of movements designed to target various parts of your body.

Proper breathing is a fundamental aspect of Pilates. You’ll be guided on how to coordinate your breath with each movement to enhance control, relaxation, and efficiency. Though it can be difficult to master at first, you’ll find the techniques on breathing can also be useful for many other times in everyday life.

As you gain strength and familiarity with the exercises, your Pilates instructor may gradually increase the difficulty of the exercises to continuously challenge you and help you progress.

The session typically ends with a cool-down, which may involve gentle stretches to relax the muscles and enhance flexibility.

What should I bring to a clinical pilates session?

We recommend bringing the following to your session, as required:

Comfortable Workout Clothing: Wear clothing that allows for ease of movement and is breathable. This typically includes leggings or exercise pants and a comfortable top. Avoid clothing that is too loose or restrictive. We have a bathroom at the clinic you can change in, but please be aware that we do not have full changing or showering facilities.

Non-Slip Socks: You may find it more comfortable to wear non-slip socks to provide grip and stability during exercises. Pilates is usually done barefoot or with non-slip socks, as shoes are not typically worn during the session. If you would like to wear trainers, please ensure they are clean.

Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during your Pilates session by bringing a water bottle to sip on during breaks or after the workout.

Small Towel: A small towel can be handy for wiping off sweat or for providing extra support during certain exercises.

Personal Mat (Optional): You can bring your own mat for added comfort and familiarity. The clinic has sanitised pilates mat’s for your use if you do not have one.

Hair Tie: If you have long hair, bring a hair tie or hairband to keep your hair out of your face and off your neck during exercises.

Any Health or Injury Information: If you have specific health conditions, injuries, or concerns, it’s important to inform your instructor before the session begins. You will receive some healthcare questionnaires to answer before your session so we can work out what exercises may suit you best and to understand if it is safe to go ahead.

Why are you offering 1:1 clinical sessions?

There are many classes available in our region and online. Whilst these can often provide a cheaper way to ensure regular exercise, we wanted to provide sessions for people who need support or guidance. We also wanted to provide a little additional focus for people who may be struggling with larger group set ups, or need additional support in terms of their wider functioning, rehabilitation or exercise routine. From the very nature of our sessions being based at our clinic it also provides a safe, guided way of getting exercise for those that may struggle to do pilates or feel self-conscious in more open environments. If you are already part of our community also, we will be able to specifically tailor your routines and advice in line with other care plans you may have.
