Chiropractic is effective: Maybe it's helping after all?!

Chiropractic is effective and evidence informed

You’d be forgiven for thinking the title of this blog is tongue in cheek. It is. Whilst some people visit our clinic initially for maintenance care, many see us initially for relief of pain. It comes to some surprise however when some choose to leave care when they are starting to get results or proclaim it’s anything but the chiropractic care that’s helping. Chiropractic is effective at helping numerous conditions and, of course, many of the things we are entitled to advertise or claim is backed by evidence. This blog post gives some tips and tricks on how to make the most out of your care.

Fact 1:  You will receive bespoke, evidence informed care at Connective Chiropractic

Being evidence informed about what we say we can help with

As a regulated profession, Chiropractors are held to a high degree of scrutiny as to what they can advertise. The conditions we can help with are backed by research and are approved by the advertising standards authority (ASA) and our regulator the GCC. All Chiropractors are trained and regulated and held to a code of conduct that means we need to focus on the ‘best available evidence’ when determining a ‘rationale for care.’ We know that there are items on the market or indeed other professions who make claims wider than Chiropractors. We know that there are testimonials out there that span beyond the list given by the ASA too. However, what is important for us is replicatability and being able to say, with a degree of certainty, that Chiropractic is effective should it be appropriate for you.

Understanding the 3 stages of care

Being  tailored to you

Chiropractors undergo masters level training in numerous healthcare modules in order to become a Chiropractor. Modules include not only those to do with the body (such as anatomy and physiology). The training includes modules such as pharmacology, biochemistry, general medicine and musculoskeletal medicine. This isn’t to say we are trained to be medical doctors, but we do share knowledge of the basic sciences that underpin health and healthcare.

It’s our training in differential diagnosis and ongoing clinical studies that enables us in the UK to be recognised as primary carers. This means that you don’t need a GP to see us, we have the skills to assess, examine and determine a rationale for care and tailor your care to your needs and expectations.

Fact 2:  You will receive information about what is going on in your case

We don’t just say “Chiropractic is effective” and do the same for everyone without checking or agreeing with you first. We’ll never make an adjustment without a valid rationale for care that has been agreed with you first. As part of our initial consultation and onboarding process, we will provide information about what we think is going on (known as a ”working diagnosis’).

Fact 3: Chiropractic care is effective

You’d be surprised how many put the success of their care to something else. Maybe it’s because of education, maybe it’s because of disbelief but we increasingly see patients suggesting that the success of their care is down to something else. Whilst it most certainly can be, the chances are that the medication you’ve been taking for months or years hasn’t just started to work after your Chiropractic session. Similarly, those exercises that you’ve always done hasn’t just started to do become effective. Chiropractic care is effective in that it makes changes to the body. With that you can expect a change in function.

Fact 4: Doing too much in one go isn’t always wise

Those that follow their care plan often make speedier results

We recognise that pain can be stressful. We also recognise the issues associated with pain. However, doing too much early on can be of detriment to both your Chiropractic care plan and also your recovery.  We see that those that follow their care plan with us often make speedier results. Whilst things may seem slow at the start, we only give stretches or exercises when it is in your best interests. We often leave heavier exercises into the second stage of our care plans to allow Chiropractic sufficient chance.

Chiropractic is rarely a quick fix: Be realistic

We live in a society where we expect things to be fast. But Chiropractic isn’t always fast. If you’re coming in to see us expecting a chronic issue that you’ve had for months or years to sort in one session, be realistic. Yes, it can happen. Yes, it may have happened before. But often a course of Chiropractic care is required.

Fact 5: If you’re unsure, ask

Be wary of online sources

Yes, this one is ironic. But the reality is that there is a lot of really bad information out there about Chiropractic as well as the good stuff. Even YouTube has a mass of videos that questionably replicate what you may or may not experience in your chiropractic clinic. I could spend ages putting the internet correct, and that’s not the purpose of this blog. The reality is however is that Chiropractic is effective for numerous issues and if a Chiropractor is regulated (like we are), they have a set code of conduct to follow. Gone are the days where there is a fear that Chiropractors are snake-oil salesmen: These days we are regulated and highly educated. That said, there’s still a footprint of information out there which isn’t as representative as it could be.
