Isn’t Chiropractic just about getting crunched? Your Guide to Chiropractic Pops and Crunches
Isn’t Chiropractic just about getting crunched? Your Guide to Chiropractic Pops and Crunches
No. Whilst social media may place an emphasis on pops and crunches, research shows that pops and crunches themselves might not actually have any therapeutic benefit. Whilst the reasoning for so many people loving a crack or a crunch has been theorised and there are some studies to suggest possible reasons for why these might be popular or entertaining to watch, the focus of chiropractic care is not to provide them. What we do know however is that the pop or the crunch comes from a little bubble of gas escaping the joint as it moves quickly: Click here for a funky MRI video showing a pop happening in a finger.
What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a profession that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing of mechanical disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. Chiropractors primarily use hands-on spinal manipulation (called adjustments) and other manual techniques to restore mobility and function to joints that may be restricted due to tissue injury. The philosophy behind chiropractic care is that proper spinal alignment allows the body to heal itself without the need for surgery or medication.
The practice of chiropractic is traditionally rooted in the idea that the nervous system plays a crucial role in overall health. By addressing spinal misalignments (often regarded to in the profession as ‘Chiropractic subluxations’), chiropractors believe they can improve nervous system function and, in turn, alleviate various health issues or improve general health, wellbeing and body function. Chiropractic care often extends beyond spinal adjustments to include lifestyle advice, exercise recommendations, and ergonomic guidance to enhance long-term wellbeing.
CHIROPRACTIC CRACKS AND CRUNCHES DON”T MEAN IT IS A SUCCESSFUL ADJUSTMENT
Many people associate this sound with a successful adjustment, but what is it really? More importantly, is it necessary for a chiropractic session to be effective?
Let’s explore what causes the pop and why chiropractic care is about much more than just the noise. Click here to watch a fun social media post we posted a few years ago too!
WHAT CAUSES THE POP?
The sound heard during a chiropractic adjustment is known as cavitation. It occurs when small gas bubbles within the synovial fluid (which lubricates your joints) are rapidly released as the joint space changes. This is a natural process, much like when you crack your knuckles.
Common Myths About the Pop:
- Myth: The Chiropractic crack, crunch or pop means the bone is being put “back into place.”
- Reality: Chiropractic adjustments do not physically shift bones back into place. Instead, they help restore movement and function to joints that may be restricted.
- Myth: No pop means the adjustment didn’t work.
- Reality: The effectiveness of an adjustment is not dependent on the sound. Many gentle techniques that do not produce a pop are just as effective at improving mobility and reducing discomfort.
WHY THE CHIROPRACTIC CRACK, CRUNCH OR POP IS NOT REQUIRED FOR A SUCCESSFUL CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT
While the sound of cavitation can be satisfying, it is not an indicator of success. Here’s why:
-
Different Techniques, Same Benefits
Chiropractors use a variety of techniques, some of which do not involve cavitation at all. Methods such as low-force adjustments, instrument-assisted techniques, and soft tissue therapies can be equally effective in improving function and reducing discomfort. -
The Goal is Movement, Not Noise
Chiropractic care is focused on restoring proper motion and function to the joints and nervous system. Whether or not an audible pop occurs, what matters is how the joint moves and how your body responds. -
Some Joints Naturally Pop Less
Different parts of the body respond differently to adjustments. Some joints release gas more easily, while others do not. The absence of a pop does not mean the joint was not adjusted effectively. -
Patient Comfort is Key
Not everyone enjoys the sensation or sound of cavitation. At Connective Chiropractic, we tailor care to your comfort, using techniques suited to your needs and preferences.
DOES THE CHIROPRACTIC POP CRACK OR CRUNCH CREATE ARTHRITIS?
Cracking your knuckles? Don’t worry—it’s a common habit, and despite what you may have heard, it doesn’t cause arthritis. This myth has been around for years, but research shows no direct link between habitual knuckle cracking and conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Arthritis typically develops due to factors like genetics, age, joint injuries, or autoimmune conditions—not from joint popping. While cracking your knuckles may occasionally lead to temporary swelling or possibly even a slight reduction in grip strength over time, it doesn’t increase the risk of long-term joint damage.
At Connective Chiropractic, we focus on movement and function, helping you understand how your body works so you can make informed choices about your health. If you’re experiencing joint discomfort, we’d be happy to assess what’s going on and provide guidance tailored to your needs.
