What Can Chiropractic Be Used For?

Our Ultimate Guide to Chiropractic.

We thought it would be a great idea to create our ultimate guide to Chiropractic. The reality is our blog will probably never touch upon every question that is out there, but we plan to do our best to answer as much as we can. If you want to know an answer to something in particular, please contact us and we’ll be sure to answer your question as soon as we can.

What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a profession that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing of mechanical disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. Chiropractors primarily use hands-on spinal manipulation (called adjustments) and other manual techniques to restore mobility and function to joints that may be restricted due to tissue injury. The philosophy behind chiropractic care is that proper spinal alignment allows the body to heal itself without the need for surgery or medication.

The practice of chiropractic is traditionally rooted in the idea that the nervous system plays a crucial role in overall health. By addressing spinal misalignments (often regarded to in the profession as ‘Chiropractic subluxations’), chiropractors believe they can improve nervous system function and, in turn, alleviate various health issues or improve general health, wellbeing and body function. Chiropractic care often extends beyond spinal adjustments to include lifestyle advice, exercise recommendations, and ergonomic guidance to enhance long-term wellbeing.

What Can Chiropractic Be Used For?

We couldn’t write the ultimate guide to Chiropractic without commenting on the myth that Chiropractic is only for back pain or for pain relief. Indeed Chiropractic has been shown to be effective at helping a number of conditions beyond this, along with providing general health and wellbeing support for many, regardless of the approaches chosen by a practitioner or clinic. This list forms just some of the key items that the Advertising Standards Authority suggest chiropractic has sufficient evidence for.

  • Lower back pain: One of the most well-known benefits of chiropractic care is its effectiveness in treating lower back pain, without the need for medications or invasive procedures.
  • Neck pain,  headaches and migraines: Biomechanical misalignments in the cervical spine can contribute to tension headaches and migraines, which chiropractic adjustments might help to alleviate.
  • Sciatica or lumbago: This might include any sort of pain resulting from the irritation of the sciatic nerve.
  • Joint pain and stiffness: Chiropractic adjustments can improve joint mobility, reducing discomfort in the shoulders, hips, knees, and other areas.
  • Postural issues: Many people experience musculoskeletal problems due to poor posture, especially from prolonged sitting or improper workstation setup. Chiropractic care can address these issues.
  • Specific Sports injuries: Athletes often use chiropractic care to recover from injuries and enhance performance by maintaining optimal alignment and mobility. It can also be used as a method to assist the recovery of certain injuries (eg: to the rotator cuff)
  • General wellness: Some people seek chiropractic adjustments as part of a holistic wellness plan to maintain spinal health and overall wellbeing.
  • Maintenance of some chronic issues: Some chronic issues, such as the effects from arthritis can be supported by Chiropractic care.

Research is required to add to the list of what Chiropractic can be used for

Many report relief of conditions not listed above. However much more research is required across the profession to give a conclusive list of what chiropractic can be used for. This relates both to the possible benefits of chirorpractic along with answering the key question of how possible benefits are created through chiropractic adjusting. As regulated professionals, Chiropractors are careful not to make misleading claims. If you are unsure whether Chiropractic might be able to help you, visit our clinic for a tailored initial consultation and we’ll be able to advise further. Our blog also has lots of information. The Royal College of Chiropractors also has a handy webpage answering many of the key questions people have when seeking chiropractic care. There is also more general information about the profession here that should undoubtedly form part of this ultimate guide to chiropractic.
