What is wellbeing?

& Tips on how to empower your wellbeing in the workplace
Wellbeing is a buzzword of the moment in many walks of life, including the workplace. But you may be wondering what is wellbeing and what does it mean for your physical and mental health?

The World Health Organisation defines what is wellbeing as

“a state where every individual realises their potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and can make a contribution to his or her community.”

Looking at what is wellbeing for us means making a conscious effort to look after ourselves both physically and mentally. For example, it could be a New Year’s Resolution to get more exercise. This can be tricky if you work in an office – but it can be done!

Here are our top tips for finding out what is wellbeing for you and how to stay active in the office. Stick a copy next to your computer screen or maybe ask your HR department to include it in the next staff newsletter. Workplace wellbeing is becoming a top priority, so encourage your employer to help establish best practice.

Drink

We’re not talking about cracking open another bottle of bubbly. It is so important to keep your body well hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the working day. This helps to keep your energy levels up both physically and mentally. It will also keep your digestive system working well, promote a healthy-looking complexion and aid weight loss.

Eat

In January, 21.4% of people will have a goal that is related to dieting and losing weight. While we could all do with stepping away from the cake and Bailey’s after the festive period, restrictive diets can also have a negative effect on moods and productivity. So, our recommendation is rather than restrict, re-evaluate and look to eat foods that boost your mood and brain-power thus beating off the January Blues (and bloat).

Move more

Sitting at a desk for the majority of the day can cause problems with posture leading to aches and pains, discomfort and stiffness in joints. It is important to get up from your desk and move around at regular intervals throughout the day to prevent this. The recommendation is to this every 40 minutes. Set a reminder on your phone or invest in a clever piece of kit, like a Fit Bit which gives you a well-needed reminder every hour to move. This could be doing anything from a walk outside at lunch time, taking the stairs rather than using the lift or just making a round of tea. Not only does moving more boost energy levels, but it also increases blood flow and elevates oxygen levels in the brain to support concentration levels and cognitive skills.

If you can’t get up and out as often as this, Chiropractic treatment could be the way forward for you. Not only is it an aspect of what is wellbeing all about but it also promotes good health for both mind and the body.

Get real

A common reason for failing to keep up with New Year’s Resolutions is setting unrealistic goals. Do not put unnecessary pressure on yourself, especially if you know you have a busy day ahead. Try to set achievable targets so you can enjoy ticking them off your to-do list at home time. And don’t forget to add those extra tasks you completed (and cross them off) to your to-do list that you have achieved. It is impressive to see what has been completed when you do this.
